GAIL VICENTE

Photo: Carina Altomonte

Born 1984, Quezon City, lives and works in Baguio City.

Gail Vicente creates installations, drawings, and paintings that explore existence, conflict, patterns, transitions, and everyday experiences. She integrates everyday domestic objects like rugs, clothes, blankets, and lights into her work about home, comfort, and rest. Her choice of materials and objects is layered with pragmatic and metaphoric underpinnings, intermixing text and found objects to enable the possibilities for meaning-making of materiality and language.

The work draws on the traditional craft of embroidery, with each piece meticulously hand-sewn and adorned using textiles sourced from ukay-ukay (secondhand clothing markets) around Baguio City. Through this process, the artwork not only reinterprets the practice of embroidery but also repurposes everyday materials, infusing them with new meaning and connecting the contemporary urban landscape with cultural and personal histories.
