Christopher Atiwon started his craft at a very young age in Hapao, Ifugao, the home of premier wood carvers in the Philippines. Inspired by the natural beauty of his hometown, he carefully shapes felled/fallen trees with a chainsaw and transforms them into stunning sculptures, with lifelike forms and intricate details, using the traditional carving technique called "kitikit." His breathtaking artistry has been exhibited globally, most recently in the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Spain.
For Art in the Park-Baguio 2024, Atiwon will be unveiling a new masterpiece - a towering flowing figure of a woman carved on madre de cacao.
Atiwon, passionate about the survival of his province's craft, actively encourages younger artists to embrace woodcarving.
